One of the best kept secrets in northern Maine. They exceeded our expectations. When I emailed to choose our entrees in advance (which is required), I mentioned my wife and I's food allergies, more as an aside. But they took note and in all six courses, served nothing we could not eat! I mentioned having a hard time deciding between two entrees. They made the one I didn't choose into an appetizer! Everything was delicious, and the service made us feel like VIPs, like ambassadors or royalty. The restaurant itself is filled with various forms of art, all by the hands of one of the chefs! There are only two dining rooms, but when you reserve one, it is yours for the evening, which makes for a great private dining experience, especially for a party of two! But one of the dining rooms is big enough to accommodate a large party. We started with Madame de Paris, a sparkling drink topped with cream. We both chose Watermelon flavor. The bread course consisted of the best croissant I've ever put into my mouth, and a braided bread stuffed with (I believe) cheese, onion and garlic. The soup was garden vegetable with penne, very tasty. The salad included scotched eggs (boiled egg inside sausage). My eggs were not scotched in consideration of my allergies. My wife had a chicken appetizer. My appetizer was the seafood crêpe, which was scrumptious and easily my favorite course. My wife's entree was filet mignon. Mine was stuffed quails (a cornbread stuffing) with a side of potatoes and green beans in cream sauce. It was my wife's birthday, so they made her a special single serving peanut butter chocolate birthday cake. I had an amazing and decorative eclair with a wonderfully robust cup of coffee (they also offer tea and cider). I've heard some comment on the meal prices, but you get what you pay for. If you're tired of going to restaurant after restaurant in Aroostook County and seeing the same menu everywhere you go, and would like to take your dining experience to the next level, make a reservation at Canterbury Royale. They have a wide variety of meats, including, but not limited to, beef, chicken, pork/ham, quail, pheasant, lamb, lobster, veal and venison. I can't wait to go back and try another.

Dining at Canterbury Royale will be a very memorable experience. The passionate talents of the chefs will astound you. Everything we enjoyed (lamb for me, steak for my husband) was, well, to use the word delicious is an understatement. There are only two tables, so reserve early. If you are in northern Maine, you have to dine at Canterbury Royale. You will always remember it. I would give them ten stars if I could. My husband and I agree that it was the finest dinner we've enjoyed anywhere.
